Labiaplasty is one of the fastest growing cosmetic procedures in the United States.

In fact, it is also steadily becoming more popular in other countries around the world.

We’ve found that the women who come to us for this procedure feel more confident and comfortable.

And it’s primarily for this reason that more and more women are opting for this cosmetic gynecology procedure.

But how is this procedure different from other gynecologic procedures?

And just how popular is it?

The Growing Popularity of Cosmetic Gynecology

Back in 2013, a study was done to see how much cosmetic procedures have increased in the U.S. The results were astonishing.

The labiaplasty was first documented in medical journals back in 1971, but at that point it was only used for congenital defects.

Over the decades, however, the procedure has entered the realm of cosmetic surgeries, and more women are finding the idea of this procedure very appealing.

So much so, that labiaplasty (in addition to buttock augmentation) took one of the top spots in the 2013 study for “most significant increases in the number of procedures” in a one-year period.

Buttock augmentation was the clear winner with a 58% increase, while labiaplasty increased by 44% – with over 5000 procedures done in 2013 alone.

Labiaplasty: What Is It and How Is It Performed?

A labiaplasty is a procedure in which a gynecologist surgically removes “excess” skin from the labial folds.

As we age, the skin all over our body starts to sag and wrinkle.

Cosmetic procedures help us put off the inevitable, even when it comes to our private parts.

When women come into our office for this procedure, we start out with an evaluation.

We check for:

  • Contour
  • Size
  • Color
  • Smooth Edges

If we find something out of the ordinary, we’re concerned not only about the aesthetics, but the woman’s comfort level as well.

To make women who come to us as comfortable and confident as possible, we may recommend removing excess skin, in addition to recontouring the labia.

When the procedure is done, our patients feel more comfortable and beautiful.

Common Questions About This Cosmetic Procedure

Before jumping into any surgical procedure, it’s best to ask as many questions as possible to see if this procedure is right for you or not.

Here are some of the most common questions that our patients ask.

1. Why Should I Get a Labiaplasty?

That depends on what you hope to achieve.

Some women want this procedure because they want the perfect vagina.

If that’s your goal, we can make that happen.

There are other women, though, who want this procedure because they experience discomfort during sex, they deal with urinary stress incontinence, or want to improve their sex life.

Some women have found that a labiaplasty has improved their life in these areas.

Still others want to feel confident wearing tight clothing – like yoga pants and swimsuits.

With excess bulkiness, wearing these clothes can, for some women, be extremely embarrassing.

When we remove the excess tissue, women can wear what they want with confidence!

2. Will a Labiaplasty Affect My Ability to Have Children?

No, not at all.

You can still conceive once you’ve had this procedure.

And there won’t be any issues if you choose a vaginal delivery either.

The only difference is that you may find that intercourse is more pleasurable and comfortable once you’ve had a cosmetic gynecology procedure.

3. Will I Be in Pain After the Procedure?

There will be some tenderness and soreness to be sure, as with any surgical procedure.

This will last for a few weeks and we don’t recommend riding a bike or having sex for about a month.

It’s best to let the tissue heal completely before engaging in these activities – and you’ll be way more comfortable if you wait, too.

While no one likes to deal with soreness – particularly in a tender area like the vagina and labia – most of the women who have this procedure are so happy with the end result that they feel it was totally worth it.

4. What’s the Difference Between a Wedge and Edge Labiaplasty?

When most people hear the term “labiaplasty” they think it’s one specific procedure, but that’s not the case.

Actually, we have many ways to perform this procedure based on each patient’s specific needs.

For instance, we can do a “wedge” or an “edge” labiaplasty.

The edge technique removes skin along the edge of the labia minora.

While results can be dramatic, some women find that they have irritation during intercourse because this procedure creates a scar along the edge that can be subjected to friction.

The wedge technique removes a pie-shaped wedge from the labia minora.

The scar is smaller and this procedure tends to be more comfortable in the long run.

Cosmetic procedures are becoming an everyday occurrence – not just for the rich and famous, but for average, everyday people, too.
